1. INTRODUCTION In 2002, Oxford University Press published a book written by Kevin O'Connor, Robert Stimson and Maurice Daly, Australia's Changing Economic Geography: A Society Dividing. It told the story of changes that had occurred in the economic geography of the nation in the context of globalization and the processes of economic restructuring and population change that had been occurring over the decade 1986 to 1996. It was noted how the nation's economic geography is "volatile" and how the "impacts of that volatility can be both profound and uneven as it differentially affects both people and places" (O'Connor et al., 2002, p. 1). In the preface to that book O'Connor et al. (2002, p. xvii) had this to say:
